Vikram was educated at Montfort School, Yercaud, a boarding school in a hill station near Salem and graduated in 1983. He has mentioned since that he used his opportunities at school well and learned karate and swimming out of lessons. Despite expressing his interest to join films after school, his father forced him to go through college with Vikram subsequently graduating in English from Loyola College, Chennai and working half way through an MBA programme. Vikram was knocked down by a truck during a major motorbike accident while in college and suffered a serious leg injury. He remained hospital-ridden bed for three years during college and subsequently went through twenty three surgeries to stop his leg being amputated.

Vikram's 1st film was En kadhal kanmani by sidharth and the film was released in 1990. And then it is followed by thanthu vitten ennai, meera and much more. Interesting fact about his career is that the film Bombay by famous south Indian director Mani Rathnam called Vikram to act but he was doing another film at that time. If he had chosen that he would be popular in 1993 itself. Till 1999 he was struggling a lot in the film industry. He tried Malayalam, Telugu too but nothing take him to the top. He acted with Ajith in the film ullasam but this too didn't give him a better position. Then he joined with Bala to do Sethu. This film was released in the time of pongal. No one expect that this film to be massive hit. Then he rocked the tamil industry by giving back to back hit films. In the film kaasi, his acting made the entire film industry to think of his talent. He gave a superb acting to his fans from films dhil, dhool, sami. He won the national award with the film Pithamagan. This film was directed by Bala and he worked with Surya in the film pithamagan. The film anniyam made him to work with Shankar. This film dubbed to telugu and it was supper dupper hit. His winning steps continued with bheema, kandhasamy. Then comes the film Deivathirumagal which was selected to asian film festival and won two awards. He is not only best actor but also a talented actor. His journey continuing and it has never an end.
